iPad Tablet Central http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com The Everyday Apple iPad Resource Sat, 30 Apr 2011 13:11:55 +0000 en hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=3.1.2 What to Expect iOS and iPhone 5 http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3857 http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3857#comments Tue, 26 Apr 2011 16:01:53 +0000 Lawrence Brown http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3857 With the iPad 2 out and in short supply, the rumor mill’s attention is now shifting to what we could expect to see in the new iPhone and iOS 5, the next iteration of Apple’s mobile OS. And while the new iPhone 5 is set to arrive some time this summer, a TechCrunch report suggests exciting developments for iOS are coming this fall too.

“Two solid sources” told TechCrunch that Apple is likely to break its pattern of unveiling the latest features for iOS, which is set to move from a 4.X increment to version 5. This would mean that instead of getting a brand-new iPhone 5 this summer, along with a refreshed OS, “a major revamp” of iOS would be introduced separately later in the autumn (read delayed), possibly in September.

iOS 5 Moves To The CloudAssuming TechCrunch’s sources are correct, what can be new in iOS 5? Apparently, it would be “heavily built around the cloud,” with some new services added to iPhones and iPads. One of them is said to be a music locker service, basically a way of storing and accessing all your music (purchased from iTunes) wirelessly, without the need to sync with a primary computer (like it is the case now).

Another of these cloud services is expected to be a location-based service that would allow users to find friends and family members. On top of that, a revamp of Apple’s MobileMe service is anticipated, potentially free (currently per year), which would give every iDevice holder free access to Apple’s cloud email, calendar, and storage service.

Next Up: iPhone 5Details about the iPhone 5, expected either June or July, are just as sketchy as iOS 5 rumors. But if the iPad 2 is any indication, we can expect the new A5 dual-core processor powering the next iPhone, as well as an improved graphics engine. Repeat rumors say we can also expect an aluminum back too, again, like the iPad 2, including the tapered edges.

Also on the table for the iPhone 5, possibly a bigger screen (4-inch) and Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, allowing users to link payments through iTunes when waving the phone in front of a dedicated NFC reader. Now that Verizon is selling iPhones too, some say that the iPhone 5 could be a GSM/CDMA world phone, making it easier (and probably cheaper) to produce just one iPhone model that could handle almost any network.

Arxan Launches EnsureIT for Apple iOS to Secure Apps for iPad, iPhone and other iOS Devices http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3676 http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3676#comments Mon, 04 Apr 2011 12:01:21 +0000 Lawrence Brown http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3676

Arxan Technologies®, a leading provider of software security solutions that protect applications from attack in distributed or un-trusted environments, recently announced the availability of EnsureIT for Apple iOS, the newest addition to its multi-platform suite of application hardening solutions, to harden Apple® iOS for ARM mobile applications against reverse-engineering or tampering for unauthorized access, piracy and compromise.

iOS, Apple’s mobile operating system was developed originally for the iPhone®, and has since been used on the iPod touch®, iPad® and Apple TV®, as well. Given the popularity of these Apple computing platforms and application downloads for Apple devices now numbering in the billions, content developers consider Apple iOS support a must for their mobile and connected home applications development. As of Oct. 20, 2010, Apple’s App Store contained more than 300,000 iOS applications which have collectively been downloaded more than 7 billion times.

This rapid adoption has not gone unnoticed by hackers who are being drawn to Apple iOS-enabled mobile devices in an effort to pirate, steal intellectual property (IP) and jeopardize business models. Readily available toolkits can be used today by hackers to compromise the integrity of Apple iOS code through reverse engineering, disassembly and debugging, and jailbroken iPhones further increase the risk of app tampering, piracy and malware insertion. Software protection is needed to maintain the integrity of the application, and the protection of business models, IP and digital rights management (DRM) robustness rules against “Man-at-the End” attacks on the binaries.

According to Paul Roberts of Threatpost.com, “we think there are a lot of reasons to expect that the security of mobile devices will be big news in 2011. However, as we’ve reported, security often takes the back seat in the go-go world of mobile application development. SMS Trojans may be the dominant form of mobile malware, but there’s ample reason to believe that attacks focused on mobile Web applications will surge ahead of device-specific attacks in 2011.

EnsureIT for Apple iOS provides automated defend, detect and react capabilities by deploying various security techniques (called Guards) such as obfuscation, checksum and anti-debug directly into the software code of each app to harden binaries against discovery and compromise. Like the rest of Arxan’s proven code hardening products, EnsureIT for Apple iOS is architected for durability and resilience with a tunable layered network of diverse Guards that offer control, trust and tamper-resistance for the app. This newest expansion to the Arxan product line also provides code security without changing the source code and without disrupting app functioning.

“Apple iOS continues to power application development for the smartphone and mobile device markets, delivering rich applications for both the consumer market and the enterprise,” said Kevin Morgan, chief technology officer of Arxan. “Customers are demanding protection for their apps across multiple mobile, embedded and desktop environments, and we are pleased to expand our solutions to cover the popular Apple iOS app market with durable and low-impact security against piracy and compromise.

EnsureIT for Apple iOS builds upon Arxan’s patented, proven and award-winning application hardening technology to secure distributed code in mobile apps.

Key features of EnsureIT for Apple iOS include:

Tunable security for mobile platforms and associated application offerings
Layered network of protections, with no single point of failure
Self-healing capabilities in the event of an attack, through restoration of protections
No changes to source code required
Support for a broad range of emulators and devices, and the ARM processor

With its EnsureIT and GuardIT® product lines, Arxan provides an unprecedented cross-platform software protection suite for desktop, server, mobile and embedded environments, with application security solutions that target multiple threat vectors. Other members of Arxan’s EnsureIT Family of Products for mobile and embedded software protection include EnsureIT for Android on ARM, EnsureIT for Linux on ARM , and EnsureIT for PowerPC.

This comprehensive software security portfolio enables application providers with a single vendor to meet their security needs to protect code and keys. Arxan’s application hardening technology solutions are available for multiple operating systems, platforms, architectures and languages including Android, Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, C/C++, Objective C/C++, .NET, Java, ARM, PowerPC and others.

Gormaya Updates Apps for Cooks. New App Versions Enhanced for iOS4 and iPhone 4 http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3611 http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3611#comments Sun, 03 Apr 2011 00:02:20 +0000 Lawrence Brown http://www.ipadtabletcentral.com/?p=3611

The TasteTimer series of apps now require a minimum OS of iOS 4. Version 2 of the TasteTimer series take advantage of a new feature in iOS 4 called Local Notifications. The user will now hear and see an alert when the timer has finished, even if TasteTimer is no longer running. This was not possible with earlier versions of the iPhone OS.

This new feature will work on any iPhone or iPod touch that uses iOS 4, including the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 2nd generation (late 2008), and iPod touch 3rd generation (late 2009). Local Notifications are not really a multitasking feature, so TasteTimer will not use battery or memory resources while in the background.

The TasteTimer series of Apps has also been enhanced to support the new iPhone 4 Retina display. All TasteTimer 2 icons and other graphics look crisp and sharp! Conversions for Cooking and Substitutions also have Retina display enhancements.

“I love the new iOS 4 and iPhone 4 features”, said Duane Fahey, co-founder of Gormaya, LLC. “Our TasteTimer 2 series of apps are now much more useful.”

TasteTimer Prime 2, with over 800 recipes, is now available for $ 2.99 in the U.S. and is priced accordingly in other regions. TasteTimer Tea, TasteTimer Coffee, TasteTimer Eggs, and TasteTimer Grill are available for 99¢ in the U.S. iOS 4 is required. The TasteTimer series is available world-wide from Apple’s App Store for iPhone and iPod touch, or by visiting: http://www.tastetimer.com

Conversions for Cooking and Substitutions are now available for 99¢ in the U.S. iOS 3.0 is required for Conversions for Cooking. Substitutions requires iOS 3.1. Both apps have been tested and enhanced for iOS 4 and are available world-wide from Apples App Store for the iPhone and iPod touch, or by visiting: http://www.gormaya.com

Gormaya, an independent app developer based out of Grand Ledge, Michigan, was formed in 2008 by Duane Fahey and partner for the purposes of creating Apps for Cooks for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad.
